We’re going to the Supreme Court
On Monday, September 8, the Supreme Court will hear the case of the Honnavar fishing communities against the inadequate environmental impact assessment (EIA), and abysmal public hearing that was conducted over 13 years ago, for a port project that will completely upturn their lives as they know it.
They’re asking for a fresh EIA to be done, to collect environmental data of the region throughout the year. As it currently stands, environmental clearance for the project was granted based on a three-month dataset.
Three-months is all they needed to decide it was worth destroying an important coastal town of Karnataka? How can that be?
Don’t the people, and the land, and the olive Ridley turtles that come to nest there deserve more than a three-month study to actually understand this ecosystem?
That’s what the fishing communities are asking for.
Wish them luck.
